Gifted & Talented Testing Schedule Elementary schools
Interested families of students in grades
pre-K-2 should be notified that the handbooks are available at their
schools. Translated versions of the handbook will be available on the
DOE Web site.
Families interested in having their child
tested for the program should complete the “request for testing” (RFT)
form included in the handbook and return it to their school by
Wednesday, November 19.
Please be sure
that families interested in applying for seats in gifted programs in
grades 2 and 3 understand that there is limited seat availability,
since we will not open new classes in those grades.

P.S.
163 offers gifted and talented programs both in monolingual and dual
language classes. Monolingual classes are available for students from
kindergarten through fifth grade. Beginning in 2008, dual language
gifted and talented classes will be available in grades 1 through 5.
The programs emphasize enrichment over acceleration.
Our gifted and talented program begins with an understanding that gifted learners possess many of the following:
- An unusual capacity to synthesize and integrate information
- An ability to transform information into new and unique outcomes
- Agility in thinking
- Speed in processing new learning experiences
- Curiosity, self motivation, and resiliency
Our program recognizes that our students are not a uniform group of
learners. Some perform uniformly within the upper reaches while others
exhibit a broader range of abilities and interests that are within the
range of expectations for gifted and talented students. The TC Reading
and Writing curriculum provides literacy instruction. As students
master basic skills, they receive opportunities to use their newly
acquired tools with increasing freedom. Intellectual curiosity is
fostered. Students are challenged to explore and refine their skills as
readers and writers. The Every Day Math program provides instruction in
constructivist and traditional methods. The program can accommodate
more advanced learners when used in conjunction with other math
techniques and methods. Pull out groups and enrichment clusters have
been used this year as a method to accommodate more advanced students.
