National Dance Institue
PS 163 received an Empire State Partnership (ESP) grant from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) for a collaboration between the School and National Dance Institute (NDI). This is part of a sequential funding structure that began last fall to better integrate the arts into the school’s curriculum. The long-term goal is to have dance instruction available to children in all grades so that each student at 163 will build up a vocabulary and experience in dance from K - 5. Another objective is to determine how to use the arts as an instructional tool (part of overall instruction rather than just an add-on). This first year of the grant is devoted to planning: a faculty-staff steering committee has met regularly since the fall; a larger group of teachers, administrators and parents met with NYSCA and NDI staff last December for a planning retreat. A theme of “Global Citizenship” was chosen last summer as a platform for developing curriculum continuity across the grades and to focus the partnership.
NDI is already an arts provider at 163 for the 4th grade dance residency program. In the 2006-2007 year, NDI used an African dance theme with 4th graders. This year, NDI is focusing on Mexican dance with the current 4th grade. All students and many parents and teachers were able to see the Mexican dances in progress at the December 2007, mid-year performance in the School’s auditorium. Final performances will take place later this spring.
Another significant aspect of the ESP grant is that 163 teachers, staff and students will benefit from a deeper working relationship with the arts professionals at NDI:
Teaching Artist & Choreographer, Bianca Johnson is a native New Yorker and began her early training at the Joffrey Ballet School. She has performed at the Kennedy Center, Madison Square Garden, and Lincoln Center, among others. Bianca attended LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts and holds a BFA in dance from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Music Director Jerome “Jerry” Korman has a more than 20-year history with National Dance Institute that has taken him to prestigious venues across the world. He recently was composer and music supervisor for the documentary film, I-Deas produced by the Arthur Ashe Foundation, and is currently at work on a new children’s musical. A graduate of Columbia University, he is a Music Consultant to the New York City Department of Education. In that capacity he is currently designing and implementing staff development for music teachers for New York City Schools. Assistant Dance Teaching Artist Luis Trujillo hails from Los Angeles, CA, where he taught in an NDI affiliate program. He’s currently in New York training with NDI and at the Alvin Ailey School.

PS 163 recibió una beca “Empire State Partnership (ESP)” de New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) para una colaboración entre la escuela y National Dance Institute (NDI). Este es parte de una estructura de becas secuenciales que empezaba en el otoño pasado para integrar major los artes en el curiculum. El objetivo a largo paso es tener instrucción de danza disponible a todos los niños (K-5) para que tengan un vocabulario y experiencia en baile. Otro objetivo es determinar como se puede emplear los artes como una herramienta instruccional (una parte de la instrucción integral en vez de solamente una cosa aparte o algo extra). Este primer ano de la beca está dedicado a planear: un comité de maestros y otros del colegio se están reuniendo regularmente desde el principio del año escolar; un grupo más grande que incluía padres y gente de NDI y NYSCA se juntaba en diciembre 2007 para un retiro para planificar. El tema de “ciudadanos del mundo” fue elegido el verano pasado como un plataforma para desarollar curiculum consistente para todo los grados (K-5) para enfocar la cooperación entre 163 y NDI.
NDI ya lleva unos años organizando y presentando un programa de baile en 163 para los estudiantes del 4º grado. En 2006-2007 NDI empleaba un tema de baile africano con los niños; este año, NDI está untilizando un tema de baile mexicano con los estudiantes del 4º grado. Todos los estudiantes del colegio (y muchos padres y maestros) podían ver los bailes mexicanos en diciembre 2007 cuando hacían una presentación de la mitad del año en el colegio. El espectáculo final ocurrirá esta primavera.
Otra cosa importante que ocurre con la beca ESP es que los maestros y otros del 163 tienen la oportunidad de trabajar en una manera mas profunda con los profesionales de NDI:
Profesora/artista/coreógrafa Bianca Johnson se crió en Nueva York y empezó su entrenamiento primario en la escuela de ballet Joffrey.
