Q: What day / time does school start?
A: The first day of school is Wednesday September 9th. The school day
starts at 8:40 a.m. and dismissal is at 3:00 p.m. September 4th and 5th
are half days for kindergarten students. Please keep the school
calendar in a handy place! Monthly calendars and curriculum calendars
also are sent via backpack. Keep an eye out for them.
Q: Can my child get a bus? When do kids get city bus/subway passes?
A:
Only children who enter the school through No Child Left Behind, the
Gifted & Talented Program or Special Education can receive bus
service. Children must live more than one mile from the school.
Kindergarten – Grade 5 students who live ½ a mile to 1½ miles from the
school are eligible for a Half-Fare School Metrocard. Students who live
over 1 ½ miles from the school are eligible for a Full Fare School
Metrocard. Please allow two weeks for bus schedules to settle down. Bus
students are removed from classes ten minutes prior to regular
dismissal to take their bus.
Q: I did not know there was a Gifted and Talented Program or a Dual Language Program. Can I apply now? How?
A:
If there are vacancies you may contact Dr. Pepe, the Principal, in the main office. There may
be certain requirements or evaluations that need to be fulfilled. The
programs may be full to capacity and there may not be spots available
for this school year.
Q: How can I support Spanish at home?
A:
We have books in the library that pair English and Spanish copies and
cassette tapes. We offer various times during which families may visit
our school library to borrow Spanish materials and participate in a
Spanish study hour. Families also may visit their local branch public
library. Families whose children are Spanish or English language
dominant should make play-dates with children from families that are
dominant in the other language.
Q: What about lunch and snack? Can I drop off my child at her classroom?
A:
Our Kindergarten students have an early lunch/recess period at 10:15
a.m. Teachers also designate an appropriate snack time in the
classroom. Only K parents may drop children off directly in their
classroom. All other students, grades 1-5, should be dropped off in the
cafeteria. Pre-kindergarten students will be escorted to their
classroom. Teachers will pick up grade 1 and 2 students in the
cafeteria. At 8:35, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will enter the gym
for morning lineup.
Q: How often will my child get music, art, gym? What does the school do for recess on rainy days?
A:
We have scheduled one period of each of these subjects per week[is this
still correct?]. For rainy day recess we have bins with paper, crayons,
board games, cards and other age appropriate play items for each class

Q: How do I become a member of the PTA?
A:You
are one! Simply by being a parent or guardian of a child at P.S. 163,
you are a member of the PTA. Look for the announcement of our first
general meeting in September, where you’ll learn about the many things
the PTA does and the many ways you can get involved in your child’s new
school.
Preguntas Comunes
P: A que hora empieza el dia escolar?
R: El primer dia de escuela es el Martes 2 de Septiembre. El 4 y 5 de
Septiembre son medio dia. El dia empieza a las 8:40 a.m. y termina a
las 3:00 p.m. Por tenga a la mano el calendario de la escuela, es muy
informativo. Mandamos calendarios mensuales con su hijo/a!
P: Como puede recibir mi hijo/a servicio de transporte, bus o Metrocard?
R: Solamente estudiantes que entran por el programa No Child Left
Behind, programa de estudiantes superdotados (Gifted & Talented) o
Educacion Especial pueden recibir servicio de transporte si viven mas
de una milla de la escuela. Para un metrocard necesitan vivir mas de ½
milla a 1½ milla de la escuela para recibir una Metrocard de media
tarifa o mas de 1 ½ millas reciben una de tarifa completa. Si su hijo/a
recibe servicio de transporte por favor deje dos semanas para que se
confirma la hora y parada de su hijo/a. Estudiantes salen 5 minutos
temprano de su clase cuando toman el bus.
A:No sabia que tenian el programa Superdotado (G & T) o el programa de Dos Idiomas como puedo aplicar?
R: Si hay puestos libre puede ser posible que su hijo/a sea asignado al
programa. Puede aver varios evaluaciones o requisitos que tenga que
completar antes de oficialmente ser asignado a un puesto en uno de
estos programas. Tambien es posible que todos los cupos esten llenos
que tenga que esperar hasta el proximo año escolar.
P: Como puedo apoyar el aprendizaje de ingles / español?
R: Tenemos libros en los dos idiomas en la bibloteca y tenemos
cassettes que acompaña a estos libros. Invitamos a familias a usar la
bibloteca a varias horas durante la semana y el mes. Tambien use el
recurso del la bibloteca local. Haga citas con familias del otro idioma
para intercambiar.
P: Que pasa durante la hora de almuerzo y merienda.Puedo dejar a mi hijo/a directamente en el salon de clase por la mañana?
R: Las clases de Kindergarten comen a las 10:15 a.m. Cada maestro
tambien han designado una hora de merienda en el salon por la tarde.
Por la mañana puede dejar a su hijo/a en el salon.
Todos los estudiantes deberán ser dejados en el vestíbulo de la escuela
y despues proceder a la cafetería (grados 1-2) y al gimnasio (grados
3-5) donde serán recogidos y escoltados a sus aulas por sus profesores.
P: Cuantos veces reciben arte, gimnasio, etc? Que hacen durante recreo los dias que hace lluvia?
R: Cada clase recibe un periodo a la semana de cada clase
especializidad. Cuando llueve tenemos cajones con juegos y materials de
arte para cada clase. Tenemos un comite de recreo si quiere usted se
