Admissions at 163
P.S. 163 currently has five kindergarten classes: two dual-language (Spanish-English) general education classes, one monolingual (English) general education class, one G&T class and one CTT (Collaborative Team Teaching) class. This admissions information is current as of February 1 but is subject to change.
General Education admissions (including dual language)
To apply to P.S. 163, you must fill out an application form indicating any/all programs you are interested in and return it to the school by March 12. We will place students according to the program(s) for which they have applied. If there are more applications than seats, we will hold an in-school lottery that will take place before March 22. We will offer spots to families in the following order: 1. zoned families with siblings, 2. zoned families without siblings, 3. within district with siblings, 4. out-of- district families with siblings, 5. in district families without siblings.
We will begin notifying all families who have submitted an application of their admissions status (acceptance or wait list) on March 22. If you have not received your notification by April 1, please contact the school.
Historically, we have been able to offer seats to out-of-zone families. We expect to create a wait-list for these families. We will offer placement from this list during the weeks and months after the initial notification period. Families applying for the dual language program will be contacted to arrange for a language assessment for their child.
G&T admissions
In order to be eligible for a G&T class in September 2010, you must already have applied to the Department of Education to have your child tested. Placement in a G&T classroom is handled through the DOE. For information about the G&T program and selection criteria, please visit the DOE website: http://schools.nyc.gov/Academics/GiftedandTalented/default.htm
Score reports and applications with available G&T sites communicated to eligible students will be sent to families in early April, with applications due late April. In June, placement offers will be communicated to parents, and parents accept or decline placement offers.
If you have a child in grade 3, 4 or 5 who scores level 4 in both the statewide tests (ELA and mathematics), s/he is eligible for placement in a gifted class.
Special education and CTT admissions
All special education students must apply at their home zoned school but actual placement is arranged through the regional placement officer. P.S. 163 offers a CTT program, SETSS and related services. For placement in the PS 163 CTT program, the placement officer must issue an A1 letter of authorization for placement. Please bring a copy of the IEP when you apply.
Pre-K admissions
Admission applications for pre-K are handled by the Department of Education
(http://schools.nyc.gov/ChoicesEnrollment/PreK/default.htm). Applications will become available the week of March 1st on-line and/or at school. P.S. 163 has one full-day CTT pre-school classroom of 18 students.
